The name of this monumental country house is displayed on the facade: Welna. It was the Enschede textile manufacturer Benjamin Willem ter Kuile (1853–1926) who had it built in 1906. Initially intended as a country house, but the family enjoyed it so much they decided to live there permanently. The wing added in 1916 served as an office. Working from home, Benjamin Willem ter Kuile was doing it long before this phenomenon was coined. Villa Welna, designed by regional architect Karel Muller, blends the charm of an English cottage and a Swiss chalet—an eclectic composition typical of his signature. Set in a lush estate just outside Enschede, the villa has been restored with love and precision. Original elements like wood-carved staircases, tile floors, fireplaces, and stained glass were preserved and enhanced with modern comfort. The spacious country-style kitchen is the heart of the home, featuring wide oak floorboards, double Quooker taps, a large kitchen island, built-in appliances, and a majestic black La Cornue stove—every culinary detail has been considered. It invites you to cook, entertain, and gather in style. Historic features like the original pass-through window and laundry chute add charm and character, while underfloor heating ensures daily comfort. The garden is equally enchanting: mature trees, hawthorn hedges, split-rail fencing, a natural pond with fountain, and computer-controlled irrigation reflect the estate’s grandeur. Several terraces offer the perfect spot for morning coffee or summer dinners under the mulberry trees. The stylish private bar, inspired by Soho House, adds a unique touch for relaxing or hosting in style. A timeless place where heritage, elegance and comfort flow together seamlessly.
